Taman
Mini Indonesia Indah (Beautiful Indonesia in Miniature) is a 100-hectare
amusement park and cultural destination the park gives visitors a quick tour of
the entire country, with pavilions from each of the provinces, complete with
examples of the architecture, handicrafts and clothing of the different
cultural groups in the provinces.
BHARATA THEATER
Whether
or not you are familiar with Hindu mythology, understand classical Javanese or
like styled singing, you will be enchanted by an evening at the Bharata Theater
on Jalan Pasar Senen
TAMAN ISMAIL MARZUKI
Jakarta's
premier cultural showcase, this large complex of galleries, theaters,
bookstores and cafe's is a thriving center of performing arts. There are almost
nightly performances and you never quite know what you will see up on stage.
TEXTILE MUSEUM
Located
in an ornate 19th century house, the museum is home to massive collection of
batik and woven cloth from around Indonesia, as well as old weaving equipment
and batik making tools
WAYANG (PUPPET) MUSEUM
The most engaging museum in the Kota area is the
newly renovated Wayang (Puppet) Museum, at Jalan Pintu Besar 27, flanking the
main square. The ordinary looking building boats an array of puppet from
Indonesia and abroad. For a full wayang performance, tune into Radio Indonesia
on Saturday evenings. The live broadcasts are from performances, which rotate
among four cities in the region. The National Museum has one of the largest
collections of Indonesian artifacts in the world. The Tuesday morning English
language tours are a good introduction to the museum. The best exhibits are
ceramics, bronze and stove sculptures
CITY
MUSEUM
The city museum, one of the most outstanding
examples of colonial architecture, houses an eclectic collection of ornately
carved Dutch furniture, weapons, portraits and replicas of Hindu
inscriptions. Across the square from the City Museum is the neoclassical
Palace of Justice, now known as the Art and Painting Museum or Balai Seni Rupa.
This museum is noted for its collection of impressive ceramic exhibits.

FISH MARKET
This market at the mouth of the Ciliwung
River is an interesting way to start the day. When the fishermen bring in the
daily catch to sell, the market comes alive with unique sight, sound and
smells.
MARITIME MUSEUM
Standing near the entrance of Sunda Kelapa,
this Dutch East Indies warehouse dates back to the mid-1600s.
GLODOK
Jakarta's version of Chinatown, Glodok is
bustling of commercial area of small streets, exotic shops, narrow houses,
eating place and hawkers. Of special interest is the giant electronics center
here, which has some of the best prices in town
NATIONAL ARCHIVES
Dating back to 1760, this was formerly the
country house of Governor - General Reinier de Klerk and still retains its
formal garden, original woodcarvings, tiles and furnishings.
NATIONAL MONUMENT
Jakarta's most well known landmark and a
must visit tourist site, the 137-meter tall Monas opened in 1975 as a symbol of
the nation's independence and strength. Take the elevator up to the observation
deck the sweeping views of the city, or visit of the museum in the base of the
monument.
NATIONAL MUSEUM
Built in 1862, this is the most important museum in
the country and one of the best in the region. It has massive of collection of
cultural object from around the archipelago, prehistoric artifacts, bronze
pieces from the Hindu period and stone pieces from some of the countries
ancient temples.
ISTIQLAL MOSQUE
This magnificent national mosque is the largest in
the Southeast Asia. It is open to the public and tour guides are available to
walk you through this overwhelming house of worship.
JAKARTA ARTS
THEATER
Built in 1821, this neo Renaissance structure is
among the city's most important cultural institutions and the venue for some of
the best traditional and contemporary music, dance and theater performances by
both Indonesian and foreign artists.
PASAR BARU
This traditional market is home numerous shops and
vendors, and it is interesting just to walk through the area and watch the
people go about their activities.
RAGUNAN ZOO
About kilometers south of city center, the
185-hectare Ragunan Zoo has an impressive collection of wildlife from Indonesia
and the world. Among the highlights are the Komodo dragons, Javan tigers and
everybody's favorite the orangutans.
THOUSAND ISLANDS
The Thousand Islands are a string of islands north
of the city, in the Java sea, that have become popular day and weekend destinations
for Jakartans looking to escape the city. Easilly the accessible by boat from
Ancol Marina, some of the islands are privately owned, others are completely
deserted save for the coconut trees and others have been developed for
tourists. There are numerous diving and snorkeling opportunities, with lots of
coral formation around the islands.
